We met Thomas Henry Calder through his grandson Mike. By one of life’s great coincidences Mike’s grandfather signed up on the same day, in the the same recruiting hall as Samuel RUSH, the first husband of John’s grandmother. They were in the same regiment and their service numbers are only a few apart.
Rifleman Thomas Henry Calder S/18135 volunteered for the Rifle Brigade early in the war. He was killed on 16th October 1916. He was one of three men killed while carrying ammunition from Thiepval Wood up to the front line. They were buried together, by their comrades, on the edge of Thiepval Wood. After the war they were moved together to Serre Road Cemetery No 2, the largest cemetery on the Somme
