When we set up the Silent Picket our aim was to provide comfort and good food to people researching the First World War. Hence all our bedrooms are en suite. We include a varied breakfast each morning and provide packed lunches and dinner on request. The house is warm in winter. The WiFi is free and the towels are fluffy. We tread that delicate balance with family research, providing sources of information as a matter of course and investigating ourselves only when asked.
Based in Martinpuich in the middle of what was the Somme battlefield, the Silent Picket is an ideal base from which to explore the history of the area. Luckily for all of us it is now surrounded by rolling French farmland, making it an equally ideal place for a quiet few days simply enjoying the flavour of France.
Our high standard of accommodation has lead to the award of 3 keys by Clévacances.
Silent Picket is proud to be recognized as a Somme Battlefield Partner joining a group of local professionals willing to share their knowledge of the history of WW1 and to promote Remembrance.
In 2014 the Silent Picket was awarded the label Northern France Battlefield Partner as we have striven to widen knowledge of the scale of the Great War recognising that 40 countries were involved in the conflict in our region.
